  • Critical infrastructure company EWR Netz GmbH protects its energy and water supply with network monitoring and anomaly detection by Rhebo
  • Rhebo Industrial Protector protects 230,000 customers against blackouts through cyber attacks and defect devices
  • ICS monitoring in energy companies becomes increasingly relevant

Leipzig / Worms, Germany, October 08, 2019 - The energy supplier EWR Netz GmbH trusts in the ICS network monitoring of German Rhebo to secure its industrial control system. The ICS is the pivotal point for the control of the energy and water supply in the region of Worms, Rheinhessen, Ried and parts of the German Pfalz. The long-established company EWR has been reliably supplying the region with electricity for more than 100 years. It currently supplies around 230,000 customers with over 1.8 million MWh of electricity, 64,000 customers with 1.2 million MWh of gas and 15,000 customers with 7,200k m³ of water per year.

»As digitalization progresses, it is becoming increasingly important for us to effectively protect our industrial control system against cyber attacks and technical error states,« says Rainer Fuhrmann, Head of Industrial Control at EWR Netz GmbH, explaining the decision for Rhebo Industrial Protector. »Rhebo's ICS monitoring system provides us with systematic support in monitoring remote maintenance and remote access points as well as detecting defects and anomalies in the ICS before they cause disruptions in the energy or water supply.«

As part of its digitalization strategy, EWR recently renewed its entire ICS and rebuilt the process network with the help of IT service provider and Rhebo partner Corning Services GmbH (formerly 3M). The aim was to guarantee stable and secure grid operation and thus security of supply in the region. This is ensured by a dedicated segmentation of the ICS from the corporate IT. Among other things, a holistic monitoring and cyber security concept is to be implemented for the ICS.

»Many companies are currently considering the introduction of anomaly detection in order to be protected against the constantly changing threat situation,« confirms Klaus Pollak, Product Care Manager at Corning Services GmbH. »The first logical step for EWR was a Rhebo Industry 4.0 Stability and Security Audit, in which the status quo of the ICS was analyzed in detail for risks and vulnerabilities.« The audit was carried out in close cooperation between Corning and Rhebo. In particular, the communication patterns between the industrial control systems were analyzed. »With the audit, we were able to review our existing heterogeneous systems in detail, and identify and verify vulnerabilities in the ICS. The network monitoring also makes our work much easier with the real-time reporting of both security-relevant processes and technical error states,« adds Rainer Fuhrmann.

For the German energy supplier EWR, the audit was only the beginning. In the future, Rhebo Industrial Protector will monitor the utility's ICS around the clock for suspicious events that indicate cyber attacks, manipulation, network error states or security breaches. Rhebo Industrial Protector is already protecting 15 percent of Germany's power supply.
