Rhebo and innogy jointly strengthen cybersecurity at energy suppliers

CyberRange-e Rhebo
  • Rhebo and innogy continue their successful cooperation in the training centre for cybersecurity of critical infrastructures »CyberRange-e«
  • Hands-on training unique in Germany
  • Rhebo teaches the operation of ICS monitoring and anomaly detection in cybersecurity processes

Leipzig/Essen, Germany, February 27, 2020 − Since July 2019, innogy SE in Essen/Germany has been providing practical cybersecurity training for energy supply companies. Their cybersecurity academy »CyberRange-e« offers trainees a wide range of know-how and knowledge, from the basics to the operative processes. Rhebo's software has been integral to the academy's program from the very beginning. Not only is the ICS monitoring solution and anomaly detection Rhebo Industrial Protector used in the training rooms. Andreas Schmid, Head of Service & Support at Rhebo, also provides regular training to trainees on how ICS monitoring can successfully counter new and unknown attack scenarios.

»The CyberRange-e offers what many security training centres lack,« explains Andreas Schmid. »There is a clear hands-on approach with real equipment under real conditions«. For example, the training centre has dedicated facilities for a control room, a switching station, a power station and transformer stations. These are equipped with fully functional hardware commonly used by energy suppliers. »The trainees do not only get the theory. They can test and practice their skills in a realistic training environment with red and blue teams. In this way innogy has created something really unique and incredibly important in Germany«.

»In the CyberRange-e, our trainees and their infrastructure are exposed to cyberattacks that are very likely and difficult to avert,« Alexander Harsch, project manager of the CyberRange-e, confirms the training center's approach. »Since the greatest danger to companies comes from new and unknown attack patterns that are overlooked by current security systems, Rhebo is an integral part of the training. In addition, some of the energy suppliers we train are already using Rhebo Industrial Protector. With the help of anomaly detection, our participants have a serious chance to detect and fight off professional attacks with novel patterns at an early stage. Rhebo has supported us in this since the beginning. Our trainees especially appreciate the technical and procedural understanding. Rhebo manages to engage managers, IT staff as well as OT managers and technicians alike. The feedback is consistently positive.«

With »CyberRange-e« innogy provides the right answer to the intensifying threat situation. Because a team can only be successful against cyberattacks if it understands the attack scenarios and has practically internalized the necessary procedures.
