- Grid operators Stromnetz Hamburg and Mitnetz Strom protect their control systems with anomaly detection from Rhebo
- Rhebo Industrial Protector sustainably secures and increases plant stability
- Basic configuration errors and security gaps already eliminated as part of Rhebo Industry 4.0 Stability and Security Audits
Leipzig / Hamburg / Taucha, Germany, November 13, 2018 - The electricity transmission system operators Stromnetz Hamburg GmbH and Mitteldeutsche Netzgesellschaft Strom trust in the industrial anomaly detection Rhebo Industrial Protector from tech company Rhebo to secure their network control systems. The two companies are among the largest network operators for urban and regional supply in Germany. In total, they supply 4.2 million households in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the federal states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Brandenburg with electricity.
Implementing smart concepts securely and reliably
Dirk Hollmach, Head of Net Operations at Mitnetz
»As Central Germany's largest electricity network operator, we have a special responsibility to ensure security of supply. In order to meet the growing demands on our operations resulting from the energy revolution, digitalization and increasing cyber threats, we completely renewed our control system in 2017. With Rhebo, we can be sure that any anomaly in our network control system will be reported to us in real-time enabling us to react immediately«.
The anomaly detection had already been deployed at both energy suppliers at the beginning of the year during a Rhebo Industry 4.0 Stability and Security Audit. The audit serves as an initial digital inventory of control systems. Within a few days, those responsible for the control systems were given a detailed overview of all devices active in the network control system, all communication processes as well as a detailed analysis and risk assessment of the infrastructure. Anomalies and vulnerabilities were thereafter resolved.
Thomas Volk, Managing Director Stromnetz Hamburg GmbH
»Stromnetz Hamburg has been committed to the digitalization and modernization of the energy industry for many years. From the pilot project SmartGrid Hafen City Westend to the EU project mySMARTLife, we are pushing the use of intelligent, networked supply concepts. This, of course, also increases the demands on operational management and, not least, the cyber security of our network control systems. All systems and data required to control our power grid must be protected against external manipulation. This has the highest priority for us. Rhebo Industrial Protector convinced us with its functionality, depth of detail and real-time detection of even hidden anomalies«.
In the future, Rhebo Industrial Protector will investigate the network control systems of both network operators 24/7 for suspicious processes that indicate cyber attacks, manipulation, network problems or vulnerabilities.
Klaus Mochalski, CEO Rhebo
»With Stromnetz Hamburg and Mitnetz, we are delighted to support two very modern grid operators. During the audit, we were positively surprised at how well structured the control systems of both suppliers already were and how effectively they are controlled. With Rhebo Industrial Protector, operators are taking the next logical step to monitor their infrastructure in depth and protect it from disruptions that common security solutions would not detect«.
