BayWa r.e. renewable energy GmbH plans, builds and operates wind farms and photovoltaic (PV) systems worldwide. Technical management, servicing and maintenance are often carried out remotely. Wind farms and PV parks are therefore subject to a particularly high risk of danger. In addition to the protection of sensitive data, the cyber security strategy focuses above all on plant availability, fleet protection and security of supply.

BayWa r.e. already has its own security solution called SystemSafe in use for this purpose. This ensures both secure data transmission and continuous monitoring of performance data. The Smart Energy Gateway MRX from INSYS icom is used as the core device of these functionalities. Within the scope of a field test, a monitoring of the communication with anomaly detection should be added to this gateway. The aim was to detect new types of attacks, advanced persistent threats and technical faults on the remote-controlled energy systems in real time.
